① There is a main hall.

It was built in 1243 by Ryochu, the third patriarch of the Jodo sect.

Ryochu was a Jodo sect monk in the Kamakura period.
The three Jodo sect patriarchs are Honen, Seiko, and Ryochu.

Ⓐ In 1495, it was designated as a place of imperial prayer (protecting the nation and ensuring peace and prosperity) by the emperor and retired emperor of the time.

Ⓑ During the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated it as the "basic training center" for Nembutsu faith and Buddhist studies.

It was also designated as the "lead of the 18 temples in the Kanto region (designated as places of learning by the Tokugawa shogunate)."

The main hall was built in 1698.
It is the largest main hall in Kamakura.

It is built in "Irimoya-zukuri" (a Japanese roof architectural style) with "copper plate tile roofing".

It is a national important cultural property.

This is the birthplace of the Juya Memorial Service at Jodo sect temples across the country.
It began in 1495 and has been going on for over 500 years.

It is held every year from October 12th to 14th.
(It is scheduled to be open during normal times when there is no risk of infectious diseases or epidemics.)

 

  There is a Kaisan-do Hall.

It enshrines the portraits of the founder and past head priests.
You can eat vegetarian cuisine (reservations required).


 

  There is a Sanmon Gate.

It was built in 1847.
It is the largest Sanmon gate in Kamakura.

It is built in a style called Goken Sanko Ni Kainijūmon.
It is a two-story gate divided into five sections by pillars, the three in the middle of which are passageways.

On the second floor, you can see the Shaka Triad, the Four Heavenly Kings, and the Sixteen Arhats.

④ There is a Bell Tower.

It was built in 1847.
It is a tiled bell tower made of zelkova wood


 

⑤ There is Amibiki Enmei Jizo Bodhisattva

It is the 24 Jizo Bodhisattva ,no.22 in Kamakura.

⑥ There is the Naito family graveyard

There are more than 100 stone towers.

This is the graveyard of the Naito family, the lords of Nobeoka Domain in Hyuga, and the parishioners of Komyo-ji Temple in Iwaki, Mutsu Province.
It is rare to have so many daimyo graves gathered in one place.

It is a historic site designated by the city of Kamakura.


 

⑦ There is a Juya Memorial Service

This is the birthplace of the Juya Memorial Service at Jodo sect temples across the country.
It began in 1495 and has been going on for over 500 years.

It is held every year from October 12th to 14th.

⑧ There is a Kishu Garden.

It is said to have been built by the famous Edo gardener Kobori Enshu.

ⒶThere is a lotus pond in the garden.
The lotus is an ancient lotus that sprouted from a lotus seed about 2000 years ago.

ⒷThere is also a hall called Taisho-kaku in the garden.
It was built to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect.
The Amida Triad is on the second floor.

You can see lotus flowers from July to August.
You can enjoy the lotus while drinking tea, but there is a fee.

 
 
⑨  There is a rock garden of the three Buddhas and five ancestors.

It is a dry landscape garden.

 

There are stones in this garden.
Each of these stones represents one of the three Buddhas and five ancestors.

Three Buddhas and Five Patriarchs...
"Three Buddhas" refers to the Amida Triad of the Pure Land.
Amida Nyorai, Kannon Bodhisattva, and Seishi Bodhisattva.

"Five Patriarchs" refers to Shakyamuni, Zendo, Honen, Chinzei, and Kishu of Pure Land Buddhism, who preached about the Pure Land.


 
⑩ There is Tenshozan.

You can see Mt. Fuji and the sea.
This is a view from one of the "50 Most Beautiful Places in Kanagawa."

As you climb the mountain,
ⒶAlong the way, there is the grave of the temple's founder (first chief priest), Ryochu Shonin.

ⒷThere is also the grave of Hojo Tsunetoki, the founder of Komyo-ji Temple (a person who provided financial support for the construction of the temple or a well-known person who lent his strength).


 
 
 ⑪ There is Hanei Inari Daimyojin

The founder, Ryochu Shonin, helped a baby fox.
The parent fox then appeared in a dream and gave him medicinal seeds as thanks.
It is said that when he gave the leaves of the seeds to a person who had been sown and was afflicted by the plague, the disease was cured.
